Many people are concerned about supplying personal and/or financial information over the internet. These details have been put together so that you can be reassured that our site takes appropriate security measures for the handling of such details.
We make use of industry standard encryption methods (PGP) and use a 'secure server' (SSL) to collect all personal details.
When subscribing or logging in to the archive you will be immediately diverted to our secure server, and can recognise this from the web URL https (the 's' denotes that the server is a secure one) so that your details cannot be viewed by anyone else. You may also see the padlock symbol at the bottom left of your screen, and/or have a pop-up window inform you that you are being diverted to a secure server (depending on how your browser is set up). This means that no-one else can gain access to your username and password.
Similarly, all personal and financial details which we collect make use of the same secure server technology, so you can be sure that they are made available to the necessary individuals only.
Depending on the type of subscription you take out, your details are handled in one of two ways:
The following statement explains our policy regarding the personal information we collect about you.
From time to time, you will be asked to submit personal information about yourself (e.g. your name and email address etc.) in order to receive or use services on our website. Such services include competitions like the weekly SAQ, emailed comments from you about our debate question and other personalised services.
By entering your details in the fields requested, you enable Nursing Standard Online to provide you with the services you select. Whenever you provide such personal information, we will treat that information in accordance with this policy. Our services are designed to give you the information that you want to receive. Nursing Standard Online will act in accordance with current legislation and aims to meet current Internet best practice.
Submitting personal information
When you supply any personal information to Nursing Standard Online (eg., for competitions, or our personalised services) we have legal obligations towards you in the way we deal with that data. We must collect the information fairly (see the notices on particular webpages that let you know why we are requesting the information); we must let you know how we will use it; and we must tell you in advance if we decide to pass the information on to anyone else.
Where personal information is held for people who are not yet registered but have taken part in other Nursing Standard Online services (eg., competitions), that information will be held only as long as necessary to ensure that the service is run smoothly. We will ensure that all personal information supplied is held securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
As Nursing Standard Online's services expand, there will be more opportunities to enhance the services provided to you. If, and only if, you consent to being contacted by email when registering with the site, then we may from time to time send you details of other Nursing Standard Online services and products that may be of interest to you and offer you the opportunity to subscribe to them.
We may also offer you the opportunity to participate in surveys, carried out by Nursing Standard Online or its agents, that help our research into the types of service we offer. Nursing Standard Online will keep a record of information provided by you. Please note that any information you provide to Nursing Standard Online will only be used within Nursing Standard Online or RCN Publishing. It will never be supplied to third parties without first obtaining your consent unless we are obliged by law to disclose information.
Our email policy is strictly 'opt in', so you won't unknowingly be added to any email lists. You can also change your preferences at any time by visiting the archive and following the 'Update my details' link.
