Sexual dysfunction is common among people with schizophrenia but it is often overlooked in clinical practice and research. There is a clear association between antipsychotic medication and male and female sexual impairment, with implications for clients’ quality of life, concordance with medication and subsequent costs of services. Pharmacological review and psychosocial interventions can be helpful, but adequate training of mental health professionals in the detection and management of this problem is paramount.
